As long as there are basements, lofts, and lauded underground haunts there are going to be Punk outfits to play them. These days, there just isn’t a shortage of lyricists willing to scream at your face, break-neck beat keepers, and purveyors of flame-licked riffs.
Something needs to set you apart, and any band willing pen odes to the under-appreciated Peter Criss, the pop culture icon that is Uncle Fester, and the Philly punk scene will receive my full support…and such is the case with the South Jersey based and Philly-beloved The Barren Marys.
With all that said, the depth of this crew’s songwriting ability reaches far deeper than a few attention grabbing film and movie references, and evidence of that can be found on The Barren Marys debut self-titled full length, a nine-track collection of crude and blistering instrumentation paired with intelligent commentary, most notably on the severe attitude that often accompanies DIY practitioners, and the ethical conflict that can occur when said individuals get a record deal…but its done in 76 seconds and is all in good fun and reminds me of how the Bouncing Souls would tackle such a subject.
Anyway, stream The Barren Marys latest offering below and stay tuned for more on this burgeoning outfit.
