If you’re an American artist in a particular stage in life, the past few years have certainly been filled with quite a lot of internal reckoning. NJ-based artist Mark Bucci dealt with the wide swath of these emotional conflicts while touring the country and playing guitar for ManDancing in the lead up to the rancorous 2016 election. In the wake of that experience, Bucci would also go on to work through the long painful simmer of a dissolved relationship.
The road through and growth charted in this time in the songwriter’s life comes to comprise the bulk of his debut album as Brewster, Forever Better Kissers. Speak Into My Good Eye is happy to be hosting the exclusive premiere of its latest single, “Being Clever,” today.
On the track, Bucci works off of heart-beat keys layering in acoustic strums as he recounts the beauty in pain that only hindsight can resolve.
“‘Being Clever’ is a song about growing up, and it’s a pretty big one for me. When I first began writing this album, I was working on coming to terms with a few parts of myself that were less than admirable. In retrospect, a lot of them were magnified under a lens of depression and anxiety, but now with some time between me and it’s writing, I can see that this was me working that out too. This song was the first to come into clear view, and I think lays the road that Forever Better Kissers traverses. It’s an apology, and me accepting that apology myself, in the hope of not losing my disposition in the process.”
