Hailing from Sparta, NJ and named after a beach club on the Jersey Shore, Deal Casino make music that sounds like it has ambitions well beyond the Garden State.
The Runaways, the band’s second EP under their current name (They used play as Something About January, but changed the name as their music evolved.), showcases the band’s ear for the big Pop-Rock sounds of bands like Coldplay and Kings of Leon.
Opener “Hurricane” starts things off with lead singer Joe Parella’s almost spoken word, “I can feel it like a hurricane,” and alternates between quieter and more raucous sections before finishing with its final crescendo. That contrast between subdued, mellow and loud, anthemic characterizes all of the songs on the EP. Whether that contrast comes in the alternating sections of songs like “Hurricane” or “Tomorrow” or in the slow, steady builds of “Blanck” and Americana rocker, “The Runaways,” Deal Casino always seem to have a big blow up waiting just around the next corner.
I don’t know the mechanics of how these things happen. If I did, I’d be a wealthy, wealthy man. But, when I hear the songs on The Runaways, it’s not that hard for me to imagine a crowd of fans at some huge summer festival or The Barclays Center swaying along in time with the music.
