Last year, Lancaster, PA-based songwriter April Hartman began recording under the moniker Apes of the State fleshing out the new band with a collection of musicians from her former project, Apes. Started off as a bedroom project, Apes of the State was born with real urgency as imparted by the title of the debut release, All I did this summer was go to rehab. An EP and a single followed as Hartman’s sharp, heart-on-the-sleeve lyrics and distinct folk-punk style developed ahead of laying down a full band debut.

This City Isn’t Big Enough, out March 11th, was recorded over two 12-hour live sessions at FLUX=RAD Recording Services in Coplay, PA. The aforementioned single from last year, “I Listened” and “Sober Intentions” are brilliant initial entry points into the Apes of the State sound and Speak Into My Good Eye is happy to be hosting the exclusive premiere of them both below.

The blend of folk and punk presented on the two singles works harmoniously as one could easily hear either being played in the straightforward style of the genres.

“I Listened” finds Hartman trying to communicate with a crush who likes the Mars Volta, the color yellow and The Shawshank Redemption. With those surface level interests, Hartman cuts to the core of the emotional depth in her attraction singing, “Like how you said with tears in your eyes that you wish that being grateful was enough to keep you from feeling sad all the time.”

“Sober Intentions” ramps up in speed and cuts to the chase straight away in that Hartman just wants to be “your next crazy ex-girlfriend.” This clarity in sobriety breeds a unique strain of existential anxiety and it’s made pretty clear that the Hartman doesn’t want to have to play any games or be triggered into a freak out over a Facebook status.

I look forward to the release of This City Isn’t Big Enough in full, but in mean time be sure to stream “I Listened” and “Sober Intentions” below. Apes of the State will also be heading out on their first national tour kicking off on March 5th w/ The Broken Arrow Sparrow, Sons of an Illustrious Father + more in New Brunswick, NJ.
