One of the great things about Asbury Park, and any insular artistic community for that matter, is that although there are many who have traceable roots to the area, we’re also extremely welcoming of talented transplants. Hailing from Texas, the now Shark River Hills based singer-songwriter Jonathan Tea will look to add his own stamp to the city’s musical legacy with appropriately titled debut LP, Coming Home, out July 21st.
Recorded at Lakehouse Recording Studios, Tea’s initial offering has already picked up some traction with the first single, “Dark Down Here”, receiving airplay in other states while making its local debut on 90.5 The Night’s Fresh Tracks. Speak Into My Good Eye is now happy to host the exclusive premiere of Tea’s latest single, “Less of You.”
On “Less of You,” the talented singer-songwriter breaks the mold cast on him by others and finds that sometimes the best advice comes from a realized sense of self. Backed by his firm delivery and Elvis Costello infused with souther soul sound, the track has a cool, undeniable energy.
“‘Less of You’ is about a period of time in my life where I had a lot of people telling me how I should be living my life,” says Tea. “I was making tough decisions and some pretty drastic changes and some people didn’t like that. They wanted me to reach for the lowest rung of the ladder like the rest of the sheep. This song is a fully extended middle finger to anyone who tries to crap on what you love.”
Stream Jonathan Tea’s “Less of You” below and catch him on July 23rd in Belmar as a part of 90.5 The Night’s Songwriters on the Beach series.
