Long time followers of SIMGE likely know of my long time affinity held for bands that can swirl some beautiful dream-pop guitars while working in darker, undulating sounds. Hailing from Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, new group oldsoul hit most of my personal sonic sweet spots, and hopefully yours too.

Signed to Honest Face Records, the band will release their debut EP, Loverboy, next week. Speak Into My Good Eye is happy to host the exclusive premiere of the lead single, “Show Me Something New,” below.

On “Show Me Something New,” oldsoul run a gamut of dynamic shifts while still staying home at the song’s emotional root. Front-woman Jess Hall calls out from icy depths before charging full bore into a fiery, gravely screech not unlike Hop Along’s Frances Quinlan. Guitarist/vocalist Tom Stevens interplays with Hall, keeping up with the skeletal, buoyant structure as the fuzz rises and falls.

The premiere of the song also doubles with its video, the genesis of Stevens shares, “This past summer I took a trip out to Colorado to see the Rockies. The view from Mt. Elbert was awe-inspiring and absolutely surreal to me. Since I had come there alone, I determined I had to do something to incorporate the moment into something more lasting.

So as I was leaving the summit I took a long panoramic video on my phone, trying to hold steady while the wind needled my hands. I had the half-intention of working it into a music video somehow when I got home. When I returned to Lowell, we looked over the clip and came up with the idea for the video.

The idea behind it is the contrast of everyday, mundane activities and the experience of doing something new. We went out with a camera and took a bunch of shots of routine actions and everyday sights in our lives in Lowell and edited them together with the Rocky Mountains constantly in the background.”
