Mike Mehalick December 29, 2017 Features No Comments

As 2017 draws to a close, it’s time to lean back, press play and reflect on another great year of music. Brooklyn-based label and production studio YouTooCanWoo has plenty to celebrate heading into the New Year with their formal launch being buoyed by a series of great, eclectic releases, outside projects and the extension of their “Night Out” series of collaborative concerts into cities worldwide.

To help sort out a banner debut stint for YTCW, we had them put together a Year In Review. Check it all out below and see when and where the “Night Out” series is coming near you here.

French Horn Rebellion – “Presentation / Catalina Dice”

Aside from vocals, cowbell, and a synth solo, the boys of French Horn Rebellion made this catchy dance tune using only the French horn – even the bass! Champagne, a longtime friend and collaborator based in LA who works with NVDES, Betty Who, and many more, produced the single. The duo released the two-sided single just before a performance at this summer’s Billboard Hot 100 Festival.

French Horn Rebellion – “Rooftops” ft. Natalie Duffy

YouTooCanWoo closed out an amazing 2017 with a big release and a tour announcement. “Rooftops” ft. Natalie Duffy premiered on Billboard in early December, but it was first performed at the our “Night Out” show at Mercury Lounge in NYC in November to a rowdy crowd. This ethereal dance track is all about perspective, says FHR frontman Robert Perlick-Molinari. The band also used “Rooftops” as a way to announce the expansion of their “Night Out” show into a tour that will hit many major US cities as well as London.

Violet Sands – Hotel

The debut album from Violet Sands is an ethereal soundtrack for rites of passage and a dreamy mashup of musical worlds, from modern electronic to new classical and shoegaze. “Hotel” is the first full-length release from YouTooCanWoo and the debut album from Violet Sands, a band that first garnered attention with “No Matter What,” a track they put up on Soundcloud that went on to be featured in a Spotify campaign and who’s music video garnered a Vimeo Staff Pick and 2017 Webby Award Nomination.

Violet Sands is comprised of industry alums and members of one family, David Perlick-Molinari (French Horn Rebellion), Deidre Muro (Deidre & the Dark, Savoir Adore), and Derek Muro (Love Like Deloreans, Mighty Five), all of whom are also partners at YouTooCanWoo.

Pink Flamingo Rhythm Revue – “On a Night Like This”

Formerly of Ghost Beach and TV/TV, Pink Flamingo Rhythm Revue is the new project from multi-talented artist Eric “Doc” Mendelsohn. With a funky, tongue-in-cheek vibe, the project explores themes of vice, ego and heartbreak through tragic characters who can’t help but get in their own way.

Having garnered attention from online musical tastemakers and tens of thousands of streams on Soundcloud, Pink Flamingo Rhythm Revue will release a debut, self-titled EP out January 5th via YouTooCanWoo.

The EP’s lead single, “On A Night Like This,” premiered in an extensive piece on Atwood Magazine who raved it “begs for multiple listens, its sultry undertones seducing our ears again and again as we melt into Mendelsohn’s vivid fantasy.”

Deidre & the Dark – “Which Way”

The latest release from Deidre & the Dark channels her 60s girl group influences, with a vibrant, cinematic music video to match. The dreamy technicolor wash of young romance is punctuated by transistor organs and Motown-esque drums, leading down a whirlwind wall of sound. Deidre Muro worked with friend and director Mishka Kornai to brings her nostalgic influences into the 21st century in a vibrant, cinematic way with a “Which Way” music video – set in her native New York.

MRY – “Walking on Fire”

MRY-Walking on Fire Orange Font Red 3

“Walking on Fire” is a song about looking up into space and dreaming back into a summer escape as you feel fall closing in. YouTooCanWoo partnered with MRY (Sam Emery) to release this single after hearing his stellar debut single “Way We Go.” Emery has since been recognized by Kitsune Musique as a hot track of the week and continues to make plans to release new music in 2018.

Lex Allen & Luxi – “The Darkness ft. French Horn Rebellion”

French Horn Rebellion went back to their roots for this psychedelic dance track with Lex Allen and LUXI – just in time for Halloween. Radio Milwaukee brought the three Milwaukee artists together to create the track in just 48 hours as part of an ongoing series lead, in part, by Robert of French Horn Rebellion.

Robert will be traveling back to his hometown of Milwaukee regularly to continue to grow YouTooCanWoo’s extensive community of artists in the town where it all started for the brothers. Learn more about the collaboration here.

Live show: 2017 MTV VMAs

Audio design, award show packaging, music for Katy Perry’s entrance.

MTV has always held a special place for the people at YouTooCanWoo – from being the mecca of music videos they grew up with, to being their first network redesign branding project in 2010 – so it was especially meaningful to take on the bigness of the audio design for the 2017 Video Music Awards (VMAs).

From the title cards to the bumpers and nominee videos, they created a package designed to be an ethereal reflection of youth culture and pop music cooked altogether in an acid-infused electric soup. Exciting, cutting edge and attracting fresh audiences, they helped capture the essence of what MTV is known for, creating a show that the New York Times called “by far its most enjoyable installment in years.”

The 2017 MTV VMAs increased their youth share and dominated social media, “…trending globally for 13 hours, beating out Game of Thrones as the top trending topic” (Billboard). Working with Elastic and Empirical Studios’ fluid and stunning visuals, they used original elements as well as recognizable songs to engulf the iconic MTV Moon Person in a psychedelic liquid throughout the show.

For Katy Perry’s epic entrance, in which she floated as an astronaut into the cosmic arena, they performed a fresh orchestral rendition of “Also sprach Zarathustra” (famously used in 2001: A Space Odyssey), and then remixed the iconic piece into a trap, future-bass, house space-jam.

Branding: Oxygen network rebrand

Original music, sound design, mnemonic creation, sound palette toolkit, mix.

YouTooCanWoo created the complete audio branding package for Oxygen’s major repositioning as a premiere destination for crime programming. The pack includes an extensive sound palette toolkit with music and sound effects along with implementation guidelines for cohesion across the channel.

Visual rebrand by Trollback + Co.

Short film: Coke Habit

Original music, sound design, foley, dialogue edit, mix.

This short was hand-selected for Vimeo’s Staff Pick Premieres and subsequently lit up the online film community, going on to win the 2017 One Screen Short Film Festival award for Best Animation.

In this true story, poor Mike recalls his horrific high school Coke Habit. Inspired by the artwork, YouTooCanWoo explored music and sound design to express those not-so-subtle emotions of this teenager falling into the abyss.

Directed and produced by Dress Code.
