Tuckerton, NJ’s The Everymen wasted no time following up their 2012 full-length adventure of sax-accompanied Rock anthems, NJ Hardcore, by opening the new year with a five-track ode to Jonathan Richman titled Who Wrote These Songs, before announcing details for a forthcoming full-length slated to drop in 2014, and providing a taste of what’s to come in “A Girl Named Lou Pt. 2″, which features a fiery vocal performance by The New Pornographers’ own A.C. Newman.
The Everymen’s Mike V was kind enough to compose a list of his 14 favorite releases of 2013, which you can check out alongside a stream of “A Girl Named Lou Pt. 2″ below…then be sure to witness the raucous dance party provided by the band at a pair of Brooklyn performances on January 3rd at The Gutter, and a gain on January 28th at the Glasslands Gallery.
1. ovlov – am (self-released)
I really dislike the whole 90s revival thing. I think it’s simply yet another way for mediocre bands to hide their mediocre songs. Shitty recordings and mountains of fuzz do not a great record make. But the songs on am are some of the most solid I’ve heard in a long, long time. So fucking good.
2. Brother JT – The Sveltness Of Boogitude (Thrill Jockey)
What the FUCK is this record? I still don’t know. And I still don’t care. But I’ll be spinning it for a long time to come.
3. Rhye – Woman (Loma Vista)
The world needs a great makeout record every now and again. Once it was The xx. Then it was 200 Years. Now it’s Rhye.
4. Yo La Tengo – Fade (Matador)
They’re BAAAAAAAAACK. Hoboken’s finest come with their best record in years. At once beautiful, scary, tear jerking and challenging. Such a fucking home run.
5. Marnie Stern – The Chronicles Of Marnia (Kill Rock Stars)
One of those artists whom I’ve perpetually loathed. In this case it was always due to the fact that the focus was seemingly on the quirk, kitsch and oddness of her records of years past rather than the songwriting. This time around, Marnie’s songs are the focal point of this amazing record.
6. Anna Calvi – One Breath (Domino)
A criminally underrated album. Like St. Vincent only way, way better.
7. Charles Waters Quartet – Chroma Colossus: 13 Visions Of The City (Amish)
Sometimes you need some mildly experimental jazz in your year. This record is near-perfect. And this coming from someone who knows absolutely dick about jazz.
8. The Brooklyn What – Hot Wine (self-released)
Probably my favorite band to share a bill with. What a show these fuckers put on. So you can imagine how nervous I was when I set this LP down on my platter for the first time… “Man, I hope they did this right.” They did. Top notch NYC punk from top notch NYC punx.
9. Joel RL Phelps & The Downer Trio – Gala (12XU)
When people say “indie rock” today it means precisely nothing. So it’s refreshing to hear an indie rock record that sounds like what an indie rock record used to sound like. I mean that in a very good way.
10. Stephen Malkmus And Friends – Ege Bamyasi Record Store Day Exclusive (Matador)
It’s right there in the title. Malkmus covering Can? Need I say more?
11. King Khan And The Shrines – Idle No More (Merge)
This record is the love child of fat Elvis and The Reigning Sound. Gritty garage punk with a formidable horn section? Yes please.
12. Queens Of The Stone Age – …Like Clockwork (Matador)
A return to form by the mighty Queens.
13. Potty Mouth – Hell Bent (Old Flame)
It’s always hard to look past the hype and find a great record but this is exactly what happened here. For once a hugely hyped album lived up to the press’s adulation. Fierce sounds, killer songwriting and amazing production from these western Mass gals.
14. Washed Out – Paracosm (Sub Pop)
I really, really dislike this band. So you can understand my amazement when I was completely blown away by this album. I put it on, somewhat accidentally, and found myself completely enthralled. Thus, I had my “WTF did I miss” moment, went back and listened to old Washed Out stuff and came to the conclusion that I still really, really dislike this band. But this is an outstanding record.
