Well file this under “Did not see that one coming”. With plenty of sensible buzz swirling around the possibility of Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Strokes, or My Bloody Valentine filling in that unknown third headliner slot at this year’s Governors Ball, it turns out that we had both over and under estimated the pull of the now revealed act.
Axl Rose will bring his Guns N’ Roses to Randall’s Island this June, meaning that the notoriously tardy outfit will top a bill alongside Kanye West and Kings of Leon. So barring any on stage meltdowns or shitting flying pigeons, we should be in for a great time this Governors Ball.
Believe it or not, it’s been nearly four years since Guns N’ Roses put out Chinese Democracy, so their inclusion among the indie-rock stacked lineup does strike a bit curious. Does Guns have anything new in the chamber? Or are we in for some extended “Paradise City” re-hashes?
According to the Governors Ball announcement:
“The Rock N’ Roll Hall of Famers will perform what is sure to be a set filled with many of their classic hits. #yolo”
I can only presume that that #yolo was stipulated in Axl’s contract. You know how he loves his hashtags.
What can’t be denied is that we’re in for one hell of an interesting Governors Ball year with the festival looking to the contemporary rock, hip hop/EDM, classic rock/legend headliner model in 2013. Tickets on sale now.
