I had a chance to hang out with Bishop Briggs for a few minutes at Shadow of the City before all the music began. If you have not heard of her yet, she will be on everyone’s radar very soon, so check her out now and follow her ascent into the musical madness.
Born in Scotland a soon to be 24 years ago, Bishop and her family spent some time in Japan and Hong Kong where she began her vocal training before moving to her now home base of LA. Having spent five years gigging around town, Bishop was seen by her now manager who knew she had what it took to serenade the masses. And serenade she does, blessed with an incredible set of pipes, powerful, soulful and hypnotizing. Enough so that while performing one of her unreleased songs, “Hollow,” I felt the goosebumps start to rise on my arm.
Bishop is backed by a three piece mix of percussion, keys and guitar and the Shadow of the City gig was only the bands tenth show as a unit! Having released three singles, one of her 2016 offerings “River” has received critical acclaim and is garnering national traction quite rapidly. Watching her on the stage, she was effortless in her delivery and incredibly thankful. There were so many good comments after her set, many in disbelief that they had not heard of her before. One thing that intrigued me is her daylight set times. There is a hint of mystery and darkness in her music that suits the nighttime hours. Although she did say it feels a bit weird playing in the daylight, she loves it!
While she gets to chill out a bit during July she will be going on tour with Coldplay starting in August and the next scheduled appearance for our area is slated for October 6th at Irving Plaza.
Stay tuned for more great music from Bishop Briggs, we will be looking forward to her full release when it is set to go and her return to the area. Check out her single “River” and enjoy her answers to the SIMGE Survey below.
