With a name like Basic Bitches, it’s difficult to know what to expect. But from the first millisecond, Basic Bitches’ “Come On Brenda, It’s the 90s For Chrissakes” bites, and bites hard. It’s the kind of song one would hear in a soundtrack for a documentary about the punk scene in the 70s, yet it’s fresh and captivating.

Fronted by Naomi Scott, a Brooklyn resident from London, Basic Bitches devour any preconceived notions you may have had and spit them back up. The little glances of calm in this track make it that much more enjoyable, contrasting starkly with the noisey and jittery guitar work. Scott’s vocals are sultry and harsh – a mishmash of Brody Dalle and Blondie.

The title comes from a reference to the movie First Wives Club, a line uttered by Goldie Hawn. Naomi Scott is the sole songwriter for the band, playing just about every instrument with the exception of drums (played by Josh McCartney).

Basic Bitches are due to release their latest record, Basically Bitchin, via Weiner Records on May 16th. Stream “Come On Brenda, It’s the 90s For Chrissakes” below.
