“It’s like they know, yeah but they won’t admit. Black tears, brown tears, they taste like ocean”
Life is hard. Bedtime Khal expresses his own frustrations as a black individual in a song titled “Black Tears”, which masterfully blends post-punk, new wave, and lo-fi genres with catchy melodies.
The echoing vocals of Khal Malik, the man behind Bedtime Khal, deliver lyrics with palpable angst about his own tribulations. The quick-firing drum beat, melodies that wait for no one, heavy bassline and reverb guitars all make this track vaguely reminiscent of The Drums.
The energy of Bedtime Khal seems to make the song perpetually roll forward, but is also mindful enough to make you stop to think: “was that a triangle?”.
Khal is a Michigan based artist who just released his third EP, Fog, via Devil Town Tapes. You can stream “Black Tears” below, and the full EP wherever you listen.
