Sometimes it’s nice to be wrong. When I put on Calyx’s new single Leslie Plain and Strong, from their upcoming album Stay Gone, I thought “Awesome, I love folk punk”. Ten seconds later, I was pleasantly startled.
To be fair, half of my initial assessment was correct. Calyx’s new single mixes the DIY feeling of indie-rock with the renowned urgency of punk. As the song builds steam, it never forgets to expose tasty guitar riffs, prominent drumming, and one unquestionably emphatic bassline.
Lyrically, Calyx writes of someone named Leslie in a narrative style much like the folk punk troubadours of which I had confused them. Ultimately, it’s a story of content complacency.
You can enjoy this single down below, then play it on repeat until Calyx’s debut album Stay Gone jointly releases on February 5th, via Salinas Records, Plastic Miracles, Ethospine Noise Records, and Chumpire Records.
