Seems obvious but bears repeating for the sake of beating back burnout/cynicism, that one of the more rewarding aspects of being involved in a local culture scene is the renewable opportunity to be blown away by something new and unexpected. Such was the case when I first saw Brooklyn duo ESSi at a show with Language. Comprised of guitarist Jessica Ackerly and percussionist Rick Daniel, ESSi are a force live pulling you into their otherworldly swirl of artful, jazzy noise rock, with their eventual translation to wax a further sparked curiosity.
Wonder just a little bit longer as ESSi recently announced plans for their debut LP, Vital Creatures, led first by “Pines and Cones.” You certainly get an engaging tease of the intensity and atmospherics the band is conjuring, with Ackerly’s guitar wizardry and Daniel’s thundering drums. As someone who has had the privilege of hearing the whole record in advance, trust me when I tell ya I can’t do “Pines and Cones” much more justice than saying you’ll want to get the full context of it when Vital Creatures drops on October 4th via Ramp Local here.
ESSi will also celebrate the record release at Alphaville on October 5th along with our old Good Eye friends Russian Baths (RSVP).
