Last week marked the release of Joanna Newsom’s anticipated new album, Divers, which, I’m sure by their most recent release, had orchestral indie-pop group Foxtails Brigade very excited.
Earlier this year, the Bay Area-based band consisting of Laura Weinbach (lead vocals, nylon guitar), Anton Patzner (violin, electric guitar, percussion), Joe Lewis (bass), Dominic Mercurio (drums, percussion) and Joshua Pollock (electric guitar, vibraphone) were asked to participate in a Newsom tribute concert. The energy from that show translated into Foxtails Brigade laying down a dreamy, somewhat experimental re-working of Newsom’s “Book Of Right On.”
Weinbach’s beautifully stark vocal take mixed with the band’s string and pedal tinkering directly injects the Foxtails Brigade spirit of playful pop eccentricity into a well known and worn classic.
“‘Book of Right On’ is my personal favorite Joanna Newsom song and I love the way that she does it.” says Patzner. “We wanted to capture as much of the spirit of her version as we could without making a total repeat. The arrangement really started to take on a life of its own once we got Josh in with all of his crazy pedals.”
