“Close your eyes and see the skies are falling,” sang Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme back at the turn of the century. Twenty years and a mind-numbing array of technological and societal leaps later, Chicago rockers Ganser project a different sort of apocalypse. A hopelessness that comes when your only options are to burrow deeper and deeper into not your humanity but your “brand.”
“Bags For Life” closes the band’s forthcoming LP, Just Look At That Sky, and is the first departure from the more restless post-punk of its previous singles (“Lucky” & “Bad Form”). The duo of Nadia Garofalo (keyboards/vocals) and Alicia Gaines (bass/vocals) sing steely-eyed in the face of the foreboding clouds rolling in set on by Brian Cundiff’s drum march and Charlie Landsman’s searing lead guitar. Horns swell, eyes glaze over and the TV static takes over as Ganser assures in spite of the doom, “I’ll be seeing you.”
