There’s a ton of great music coming out of the Bay Area these days, marking it as the next scene to watch. On the soul side, we have Idiot Grins who recently released their first record since 2011.
Taking cues legends like Sam and Dave, Booker T and the MG’s and Otis Redding, Idiot Grins are comprised of Michael Conner (Keyboards), Evan Eustis (Bass), John Hansen (Vocals), Michael Melgoza (Drums) and Randy Strauss (Guitar). Their new album Big Man, which carries some Clarence Clemons weight with it, explores the variety of classic sounds that influence the group.
“I’m fortunate to own the guitar Gram Parsons played on his last album and tour before his tragic death,” says Strauss, “and it was my own tribute to him to play it on songs like ‘Paso Robles.'”
Single “Poppy Piss” is an instantly catchy, horn laden throwback pop tune tailor made for a packed out bar room. Stream it below and look for more from Idiot Grins here.
