It’s been about a year and a half since The Vaughns dropped their last formal release, the great tomfoolery EP. Since then, the band comprised of David Cacciatore, Anna Lies, Ryan Kenter and Tom Losito has been out further honing their chops in the live scene while working up some new material including their 24 Hour Songwriting Challenge submission, “Vamos.”
Now, The Vaughns return with a new single, “Santa Cruz,” a winding, simmering rocker that follows Lies’ vocals all the way up to a fiery crescendo. In her own words:
“When writing the song I was thinking about the contradictions between love as we see it in real life, and love as depicted in movies. In movies, things are often so intense, yet when I look at great couples in my life I see something much lighter. Santa Cruz, CA is known for its moderate weather climate — 60s and fairly sunny all year long — and so the thought was that maybe what we strive for in love should be more like that: consistent and warm.”
