We’ve all listened to a song that entranced you to a point that when it ends, you’re left asking “what song was that?”. That’s an inevitable question for those not familiar with Trace Mountains, and for those familiar, “Lost in the Country” will provide you with the War On Drugs inspired atmospheric storytelling you were hoping for.
Trace Mountains’ Dave Benton poses introspective questions through a warm haze accompanied by steady backing beats. Though he is the principal songwriter, Benton imparts that this is not a solo effort and that collaboration was essential for developing the essence of the new album.
The eponymous track off of the artist’s just-released new album boasts a voice that’s smooth like Slaughter Beach, Dog era Jake Ewald, all the while experimental. “Lost in the Country” shows Benton’s insightful lyricism that explores being open with yourself, connecting with the world around you, and realizing purpose. These are messages that are delivered with easy-to-get-lost-in attention-grabbing melodies.
