Live Review: Animal Collective Headlined Starland Ballroom (PHOTOS)

It was a pretty interesting scene at Starland Ballroom last Saturday night as Animal Collective wrapped their initial US tour in support of their latest LP, Painting With. The slightly unusual booking for the venue made for a much looser atmosphere than catching the band a couple dozen miles upstate in NYC and the band certainly took note.

Playing their first club date in NJ, Animal Collective ran through a heavy dose of Painting With, as previous tours have shown that they’re not married to past hits. It should be noted that nobody at Starland yelled “My Girls” or “Brother Sport” although I did hear people begging for “We Tigers” during the encore.

It was great to see these innovators in peak form in such a relatively intimate environment as they held the crowd enrapt through every up and down movement. As the closing notes of “The Burglars” reverberated through the Starland halls, there were plenty of freshly initiated, awed faces heading towards the parking lot and to the next Animal Collective show. I’m selfishly hoping for a pre-LP-work-it-out-live tour.
