Live Review: Billy Hector Played The Record Collector

Robert Juckett April 3, 2017 Live, Reviews No Comments

NJ blues guitar legend Billy Hector was in the house at The Record Collector in Bordentown last Friday night (03/31/17). It was a packed house and it was standing room only. The joint was rocking and it was pretty much sold out for the evening. All seats and tables were sold out. It’s been a long while since I last saw Billy Hector doing what he does best, laying down the Blue’s, Jersey Shore style in Bordentown NJ. Billy Hector is always surrounded by the best musicians on stage. For this show, Wilbo Wright was on Bass and Sim Cain was on the Drums. Some of you might know Sim Cain from his days with the Henry Rollins and the Rollins Band. He has also worked with the J. Geils Band in the past.

My schedule pulls me away from the things I appreciate the most sometimes. It’s been about two years now since I last saw Billy Hector. I remember the first time I saw him perform just by chance at Dadz Bar and Grill in Lumberton NJ. That was about 20 years ago. That place was packed and I was blown away by show. I have been a huge fan ever since. I have seen him play quite a lot since then but have been busy lately. I missed his shows and it was good to see him again. He hasn’t missed a step in all that time since I first met him. After 20 years, his shows are still selling out the venues he plays at and still a packs a quite a punch.

It was great to hear that Billy Hector has released a pair of CD’s since I last spoke with him. “Old School Thang’ and ‘The Fire Within’ are his latest albums with new songs that are out now and available at all of his events and he is currently working on new material for a new album that should be out later this year. Billy Hector’s catalogue now includes 16 albums. He is also a record producer and has been doing that for more than 20 years on the independent Ghetto Surf Music label.

He has been playing for over 4 decades now. For those of you who don’t know Billy Hector, he has won many Awards throughout his career including, Best Guitarist Award (twice) from the Aquarian Weekly. He has won the Asbury Park Music Awards (3 times) along with Best Guitarist, Best Blues Band and Living Legend Awards. Hector has played at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice and the Kennedy Center. He’s played alongside Bonnie Raitt, B.B. King, Bo Diddley, Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Robert Plant and others.

Billy Hector’s fusion of Funk and Blues is meant to move your feet all night long. After 40 plus years on the road, he shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon. He performs down at the Jersey Shore a lot and before you know it summer will be here. He’s still performing 4 nights a week and it’s always a party when Billy Hector is playing. It’s one of the Best shows you will ever see.
