The Flaming Lips are on the road again and they have a new album. ‘Oczy Mlody’ (Polish for “eyes of the young”) is the fourteenth studio album by the experimental rock band. They played a couple of shows in our area here at the Fillmore Philly in Philadelphia PA. 03/04/17 and at Terminal 5 in NYC 03/09/17.
The new album was released this past January and the band embarked on a tour that was described by Wayne Coyne (the band’s lead singer) as “rock’s greatest acid punch party” with “balloons, confetti cannons and rainbow visuals”.
The live show was a lot of fun right from the start. The Flaming Lips opened the show with ‘Race for the Prize’ which had the sold-out crowd of over 2,500 fans dancing and partying at the Fillmore Philly. Hundreds of very large balloons dropped from the ceiling and cannons shot confetti everywhere into the crowd while steam and smoke machines covered the stage. It felt like the beginning of one huge New Year’s Eve party from that point on.
The next song in their set was another fan favorite, “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt 1″. Wayne came out with a very large silver balloon that read “FUCK YEAH PHILLY” and threw it into the crowd. During this song, Wayne was flanked by three huge inflatable figures that included a giant frog, a fish in a suit and the sun wearing jeans. There was also giant mushrooms on both sides of the stage.
The third song of the night was “There Should Be Unicorns”. This was the first song they performed from their new album which included a life-sized prop Unicorn (completely lit up in neon lights) in which frontman Wayne Coyne rode through the crowd on the floor of the Fillmore. Pretty cool sight to see.
Other highlights of the near 2-hour show included huge dancing eyeballs (The W.A.N.D.) and watching Wayne Coyne walk out over the crowd during David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” in a huge plastic ball to the opposite side of the room. The Fillmore Philly is a pretty big place. Their light show is very cool as well. One of a kind and very trippy.
The encore ended with another fan favorite, “Do You Realize” as they always do and no one left disappointed. It was my first show with The Flaming Lips and yours truly had a great time.
