Enthusiastic music fans gathered at the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, PA, on Saturday, May 13th for a Jimmy Eat World concert. It seemed like a nearly sold out show. Jimmy Eat World was not alone on the bill, another band named Beach Slang opened up for them.
Beach Slang is a fairly new punk band that formed in 2013. These guys are all about sharing memories from their young, loud and wild days, playing in a high school band and going to punk rock shows. That’s what most of their songs are about in their album titled,” A Loud Bash of Teenage Feelings.” Their debut full-length album, The Things We Do to Find People Who Feel Like Us, was released on October 30, 2015 (Wikipedia). The band went through many hard times and lineup changes but they are still performing many shows today. Their music is definitely the kind that will get you off the couch and want to dance along to the songs.
The band Jimmy Eat World first formed in 1993. During their earlier years, the band had a more punk rock sound. They released 9 albums throughout their music career. Their album “Futures” was awarded Gold status in the US (Wikipedia). As the years went on, their music changed to a more slower tempo. In 2009, they performed a ten-year anniversary tour of the album,”Clarity.”
Most of the show on Saturday evening consisted of songs from their old records and songs from their new album “Integrity Blues” which was released in 2016. Their setlist included songs, “The Middle” and “Sweetness” which made it to the top 20 songs on the US charts. I really like their new album,” Integrity Blues” because it has a more upbeat sound. When I first heard their song,” Sure and Certain” this brought back memories to my college years. It made me think of the albums Futures and Clarity. Their 90’s alternative sound and power pop vibe got me listening to this band in the first place. I’m still proud to be a fan of their music 20 years later.
One fan behind me said, “These guys are killing it tonight!” I would have to agree since I was having a good time hearing their music live. It was the first time I saw Jimmy Eat World in concert and I was very impressed! It brought back memories to when I first listened to their CD’s in college. Another 15 years later and they still sound great! I don’t see this band stopping anytime soon! Jimmy Eat World are still able to maintain their original rock pop sound. They have toured with bands such as Green Day and Taking Back Sunday. This summer the band plans to tour with Beach Slang and Incubus.
