By now, Michael Nau has done this quite a few times. As the mastermind behind bands like Page France and Cotton Jones, Nau gained renown for his beautiful, alt-country songs. And on his newest song, Nau doesn’t disappoint.

“On Ice,” the first single from the forthcoming album Michael Nau & The Mighty Thread, shows his penchant for writing enchanting, mesmerizing ballads. The backbone of this song is a simple chord progression played on a Wurlitzer. The drums, shakers, and bass provide a head-bopping groove. In the background, spaced-out guitar chords sparkle and shimmer. It’s a soul formula laced with country western sensibilities.

While the music is soothing and lush, the lyrics are full of existential dread. Nau sings, “I wasn’t dreaming about anything / But I was afraid I might.” The lines slip between examination of the narrator’s own mental state and a desire to save a failed relationship. The repeated question, “what does it matter how we turn on the light,” becomes a plea to save a failed romance as the song continues. ?

The song’s simplicity is its brilliance. Only the best writers can contrast heavy lyrical content with groovy, mid-tempo tunes. “On Ice” is playfully honest, and Michael Nau has proven again to be one of the best songwriters around today.
