Casual Strangers

The main joy of doing what I do here at SIMGE is fielding submissions from bands I would have otherwise not encountered. Our inbox is flush with e-mails with local and national talent by virtue of me drunkenly passing out my business cards to enough people at events like SXSW and CMJ. The former of those two fests is likely why we receive so much from the fertile burrito crescent that is Austin, TX, and it is my absolute pleasure to introduce an exciting new four piece that blends a few of my favorite musical motifs.

Casual Strangers are comprised of real life couple Katey Gunn and guitarist Paul Waclawsky, “Synth Warrior” Jaylinn Davidson, and drummer Jake Mitchell. Together they experiment against jet engine sprawls, dipping into sonic psychedelia and deliciously weird themes. Think My Bloody Valentine times Zappa.

Their self titled debut is set to drop on July 22nd with SIMGE having the honor of debuting single “Cat’s Meow” which serves to encapsulate Casual Strangers’ sound. The track was recorded for the album which only took four days at the Bubble with producer Chris Frenchie. All of it live to tape!
