The Ugly Club are an import to Brooklyn by way of the Garden State and though there hometown headquarters might have been altered, the outfit’s funkified electro-pop output has not. If anything, the band’s initial sound offered on You Belong To The Minutes (2012) has been enhanced, developed, fully imagined and finally displayed on the group’s brand new single “Passenger”, which officially drops Tuesday, September 2nd.
“It’s a song about companionship; about running off with someone, a friend or lover, and leaving everything behind,” The Ugly Club’s Ryan Egan said of this latest offering, which was mixed by Chester Gwazda (Future Islands, Dan Deacon) and mastered by Joe Lambert (Dirty Projectors, Animal Collective).
“At times we feel this pull to just vanish and go at it alone,” Egan continued. “It’s kind of my take on ‘Against the World’ by A Tribe Called Quest or something. A dark, dancey pop styling.”
What often distinguishes a piece of music is its innate ability to induce singing, dancing, and the loss of a listener’s proverbial shit despite dark and emotional undertones. The Ugly Club have accomplished such a feat with “Passenger”, and you can stream it below in preparation for the band’s forthcoming October 13th show at Mexicalli Live in Teaneck, NJ.
