Montclair’s Zak Smith has released a new single into the wild titled “Tombs Don’t Roll Back”, and if you’ve never acknowledged the Springsteen influence in the songsmith’s back catalogue, it’s evident here…with a little bit of fun. added to the mix.
As Smith recently told antimusic.com, “I remember writing the hook while driving up to Boston. I had been working on getting the chorus right for a while and something in it just wasn’t sitting right. I had changed the lyrics and melody to that section a lot, for a long time the chorus started with the line “My heart is filled with ice”. When I finally came up with the chorus I had just been listening to that song “Some nights” by the band fun. and that inspired the “Tonight tonight tonight” part in some way…”
Add that to the Boss-inspired brass accompaniment, soulful backup singers, and Smith’s own frayed-velvet croon, and what’s produced is a payment of homage to the Garden State’s musical past, a narrative wanting more than out of life than the woman you’re with, and wonderful lead in selection to the penman’s forthcoming collection Precambrian Age, which is slated to drop in the Fall.
