The Long Branch-based Loser Year has resurfaced in the new year with a two-track EP titled Bummed, showcasing the three piece outfit’s prowess for a particularly jangly brand of self-deprecating rock that opens with a piece of lo fi-pop slowed to a crawl in “It’s Been A Loser Year”.
The group’s theme song of sorts features Matt Whitley’s melancholy delivery smothered in the mix by a cavernous coat of reverb, causing the frontman’s message to go undeciphered.
Loser Year’s intriguing stylistic decision, which could be interpreted as the songwriter’s sense of alienation from, and neglect by, those surrounding him, is a stark contrast to the garage-rock b-side that is “Bummed”, though the somber subject-matter is in the same vein.
