In the opening moments of Stephen Chopek’s debut LP, a dominant theme arises in “a well kept secret, is worth a thousand words.” As a member of the Tiny Giant Artist Collective, and the drummer in The Everymen, the multi-talented songwriter crafts all of those intimate ideas and hopes into See Through.
The 12 track effort puts the narrative and audible voice of Chopek at the fore joined only by an ever evolving, distortionary guitar that revolves around a central axis point without ever becoming stale or predictable. The purely personal work resonates with a sense of wired immediacy juxtaposed against warm, streetlight nostalgia as Chopek weaves through a notebook of short stories and musical sketches. That up front approach comes across in fits and bursts with the average track length clocking in at about two minutes each, as the artist slashes and burns through chord progressions and vocalizations that evoke similarities with The Dismemberment Plan’s Travis Morrison.
Stephen Chopek will embark on a summer tour including stops at The Bowery Electric’s Map Room in New York City on Wednesday, June 5th, and a performance at The Tiny Giant Summer Bummer at Asbury Lanes on Saturday, June 22nd.
