Baltimore-based artist Daniel Neiman, who records as Captain Morris, certainly has a knack for crafting a full and rich sound all, for the most part, on his lonesome. His latest single, “I Know,” turns the romanticism of its overall sound on its ear with wonderfully weird drop ins and a wry narrative about a unhealthy relationship.

“The way to show you love me so
Is to leave me alone.”

We sent Neiman the SIMGE Survey to go along with a stream of “I Know.” Check out his responses and follow here for more from Captain Morris.

Name: Daniel Neiman
Band: Captain Morris
Instrument(s): Guitar, Bass, Drums & Percussion, Synths/Electronics, Vocals

What sound(s) do you/your band make?

The sound of playing all my cards at once. It’s a barely audible and nearly sub-sonic groan, but if you listen closely it’s on all of my songs.

If you could have anything fall from the sky what would it be and why?

Trillions of IKEA ball pit balls; Just enough to coat the entire surface of the planet, but not enough to play with, so it would just be a minor (but hilarious) inconvenience for everyone on earth.

When I was a kid I used to love to…

Play flash games online.

An embarrassing phase in my life was when…

I spent my childhood playing flash games online.

The 1st album I purchased:

Green Day – Dookie.

The last album I purchased:

Billy Joel – Turnstiles (The $2 bin really came through this time).

My biggest insecurity:

Isn’t so big.

You can easily win me over by…

Cured meats. Really any kind will do but the presentation has to be right. I’d love to have one of those Edible Arrangements but have it be all salami instead of fruit. No one’s ever given me one though, so I guess no one’s ever won me over.

Sometimes when I feel whacky I listen to “Dreadlock Holiday” by 10cc because it’s crazy. I don’t really know anything about 10cc other than this song and that their name is a reference to ejaculate.

After a show people compliment me most on my…

Makeup.

Something most people don’t know about me is…

I’m a clean freak, especially in the studio (AKA my bedroom). I hate dust, all forms of which I have taken the time to index so I know what I’m dealing with when I’m cleaning. I’m also a big fan of right angles/perpendicularity/parallelism which makes recording difficult with all the cables and junk.

The band (artist) that altered my perception on life is Bruce Springsteen because when your dad takes you to 22 Boss shows, your perception on life will inevitably change.

If not for music I would probably…

Herd large flocks of animals. Not sheep or cattle though. I’ve always loved the image of a pack of feral cats following me around.

What are your favorite song lyrics?

“Purple Bottle” by Animal Collective is definitely up there. I think Avey Tare and Panda Bear are way better lyricists than they often get credit for.
