SIMGE Survey: Getting To Know Lonely Benson // Stream “Lazy Lover”

Mike Mehalick June 30, 2016 Features, Interviews No Comments

Lonely Benson

When first striking out as Lonely Benson back in 2014, artist Daniel Young sought to further his knowledge of audio production in looking to some his favorite records from the 60s. With that, he bought an old Tascam 4-track and recorded his debut LP, More.

Now, Lonely Benson is experimenting with another format wherein the first day of every month will see a new single release over the course of a full year. The initial entry, “Lazy Lover,” is a dreamy indie-pop gem tailor made for summer time strolls.

We sent Young the SIMGE Survey to go along with a stream of “Lazy Lover.” Check out his responses and listen to the latest from Lonely Benson below.

Name: Daniel Young
Band: Lonely Benson
Instrument(s): Vocals, Guitar, Other things too

What sound(s) do you/your band make?

I aim to create laid back songs with soothing sounds. Mostly I seek organic tones, but I do like to implement some digital editing and production to keep it feeling fresh. The goal is to find chill grooves that help one relax.

If you could have anything fall from the sky what would it be and why?

A stage light, like that one scene in The Truman Show. Everything would make so much more sense.

When I was a kid I used to love to…

Spend the night at a friends’ place so I could watch all the “crude” TV shows that my parents wouldn’t let me watch. Ren and Stimpy, The Simpsons, etc.

An embarrassing phase in my life was when…

My face was covered in acne and I was afraid of nearly everyone. I moved from Australia to the US around this time, and I remember I felt pretty cool because the girls all though my accent was “sooo cute.” I was still terrified and ate lunch by myself most days. Adolescence is hell.

The 1st album I purchased:

The Living End, the self-titled record by the Australian rockabilly band. Wore that one out a few times over.

The last album I purchased:

Andy Shauf’s The Party. Just discovered this guy and his record just came out last month. The melodies do it for me.

My biggest insecurity:

My music. For the sake of my sanity, I’m constantly trying to separate my work from my self-worth.

You can easily win me over by…

Handing me a drink.

Sometimes when I feel like I can’t sleep I listen to an app on my phone that plays soothing sounds and has a recording of a lady who guides you to sleep because it’s really cool.

After a show people compliment me most on my…

Backing band.

Something most people don’t know about me is…

I’m easily peer-pressured.

The band (artist) that altered my perception on life is David Bazan because he has so openly and honestly articulated what it feels like to wrestle with and eventually break loose from religion.

If not for music I would probably…

Be bored as hell.

What are your favorite song lyrics?

“Let It Be.” – The Beatles
