“Sunday Jealous” by Jon DeRosa

Jon DeRosa is a living, breathing, gateway to a simpler time in the Jersey Shore’s musical history, reaching back into the annals of our culture when artistic scenes resided, not in boardwalk-based clubs and locales, but on street corners, outside store fronts, and in the minds of the same Gospel and Soul singers who would influence the likes of Bruce Springsteen and Southside Johnny.  These creatives relied on lush vocals, captivating melodies, and alluring refrains to hook a listenership, and DeRosa, despite his inked up forearms and idolization of Danzig, utilizes that same type of vocal prowess over sparse fret-work and ivory exploration.  DeRosa’s songwriting skills and vocal prowess will be distributed worldwide by RocketGirl Records on November 5th in the form of a debut LP titled A Wolf In Preacher’s Clothes.  Stream the lead single’s b-side, a beautifully arranged cover of the Nick Charles classic “Sunday Jealous,” below:

“Bear 141″ by Elevator Art

Elevator Art’s latest contribution to the soundtrack of our lives, a conceptual EP titled Martian Diver which dropped last week (check out the review here), is an impressive piece of story telling as well as an equally lavish musical achievement that amalgamates the outfit’s Metal-coated Folk ideology, Southern-Rock six-string meandering, and electrically-charged Jazz flute manipulation with dueling vocal work via Daimon Santa Maria and Maureen McGowan…and no composition in this seven-track compilation better showcases what the Toms River-based collective has to offer than the lead single “Bear 141.”  Check it out below and be sure to see Elevator Art at The Stone Pony on December 13th when the band will perform a set at the 20th Asbury Music Awards, where it received a grand total of nine nominations.

“Katana Rock” by Dirty Ghosts

San Francisco’s Dirty Ghosts produces a brand of bass-laden Indie-Rock that attacks the listener’s senses like the most euphoric of mind altering substances, transfixing the listener with bewitching back beats and distorted six-string riffs that duel and howl like two crude metallic beasts in a midnight scuffle.  Front woman Allyson Baker plays the seductive counter-balance to this often turbulent trip, utilizing a powerful vocal style and an ability to convey tone through that impressive method.  Stream Dirty Ghosts’ “Katana Rock” below:

“Rings & Things” by Vuvuzela

Prior to the break up of New York Indie-Rock darlings Kiss Kiss, those guys and gal must have had an in depth conversation about melding the spastic insanity of Hardcore-Punk, with the reckless instrumental exploration associated with Indie-Rock, and the sinister tidings of a maniacal circus that’s run off the rails.  Evidence of this alleged conversation is the continued success of Boston’s Venetia Fair (feat. Mike Abiuso) and a new vanguard of the genre that’s risen in the Big Apple named Vuvuzela.  The outfit’s lead single, “Rings & Things,” to a debut full-length titled The Hollow Choir is far less turbulent and tumultuous than the preceding productions of their Beantown brethren, but common elements do prevail as lush, gothic ivory tickling backs Josh Benash’s demonic falsetto, which spills over sparse verses separated by Bowie-esque breakdown…before a rapid descent into altered time signatures and musical madness…stream the track below and pick The Hollow Choir, which is out now on Motor Oat Records:

“Life Is Good (Acoustic)” by I Used To Be A Sparrow

 The Swedish Rock duo that is I Used To Be A Sparrow has gained notoriety for its resonant Pop-Rock productions complete with massive walls of melodious verses and made-for-stadium refrains that roll throughout Dick Pettersson and Andrew Caccese’s debut full-length release Luke (2012), thus, it was pleasantly surprising to hear couple strip its lead single, “Life Is Good,” to its most skeletal instrumental framework and still capture the initial luster that draws this listener to this outfit.  Download this impressively withdrawn rendition below:
