West Palm Beach, Florida’s Surfer Blood graduated from the buzz of their of 2010 debut LP Astro Coast, and the success of a sugary sweet follow-up EP in Tarot Classics, to headlining gigs at some of the most grandiose music clubs in the country, including stops at such famed New Jersey haunts as Asbury Park’s own Stone Pony and the late Hoboken abode that was Maxwell’s.
Following the band’s most celebrated record to date in the overtly accessible Warner Brothers Records release Pythons (2013), it was startling to be afforded an opportunity to witness this monster of muzzled and fuzzy Surf-Pop at the most intimate of Asbury venues, The Saint.
Surfer Blood supplied some much needed warmth to combat the frigid winds swirling down Main Street with a bevy of sultry selections as Pythons standouts “Gravity”, “Weird Shapes”, and “Say Yes To Me”, while 2011 single “Miranda” and 2010 breakout hit “Floating Vibes” smothered the swarm of show goers in a wave of danceable rhythms, allowing the congregate to look past the fact that Morrisey reincarnate, John Paul Pitts, needed his memory jogged to recall the band’s trek through our musical hub by the sea in August 2012.

The vein of Sun-Kissed Pop-Rock and reverb extended through the supporting acts as the Greenpoint, Brooklyn based Fort Lean genre-hopped between lush Motown-esque melodies and the allure of fuzz-smothered riffing, while Lake Worth, Florida’s Wake Up opened the proceedings with its brand of ’90s influenced lo-fi noodling that provided Malkmus junkies their Pavement fix.
