The Burns

Fresh off the release of their video for “Wolves”, local funsters The Burns have given us a brand new single to swoon over as they gear up for an early summer full-length offering. The quartet have been a unit for about a year, spawning from similar paths of unrealized musical endeavors, and have cemented their styling’s together to become a local fan favorite.

For those of you who are not familiar with the quartet based out of Asbury Park, let’s check out their responses to our Getting to Know You Survey while listening to the premiere of “Hard On You”.

SIMGE Getting to Know You Questionnaire

Artist: The Burns

Joey Henderson: Vox & Guitar
Matt “Fern” Fernicola: Guitar & Vox
Billy McCabe: Drums & Percussion
Chris Dubrow: Bass

What sound does your band make?

The sound of 4 people having the time of their lives
If you could have anything fall from the sky what would it be?
In 2015 in Wagga Wagga Australia, Floods and Unusually high winds resulted in Spiders Raining from the Sky. Whatever the exact opposite of that is.

When I was a kid I used to Love to…

Build dams in streams, something about that shit was super fun.

An embarrassing phase in my life was when…

I used to play chess all the time. Like even in public. I would always have a portable chess board in my car that I would break out at the most inappropriate moments and just challenge strangers to chess matches. I’m glad that part of my life is over.

The first album I purchased…

Chris: Weezer’s Blue Album & The Best of Marvin Gaye from Borders the day I got my license and could drive around in my own car

Joey: Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory

Fern: Abbey Road. That CD has stayed in my car for my entire life

The last album I purchased…

Chris ‘“God Forgive These Bastards” Songs from the Forgotten Life of Henry Turner’ by The Taxpayers.

Fern: Cranston Dean High Beams.

My Biggest Insecurity…

That I’m somehow never enough but still too much. Especially as a musician.

You can easily win me over by…

Walking up to me and saying “You know Chris, The Life of the World to Come is the literally the best Mountain Goats Album and also one of the best records of all time”

Sometime when I feel ________ I listen to __________ because _______

Sometimes, when I feel like I’m hot shit, I listen to Joni Mitchell because it reminds me that unless you’re Joni, you’re not really that good, so get over yourself

After a show people compliment me most on my…

Chris: The amount I jump around.

Joey: Sweat.

Fern: My Energy. Being on stage is the best part of my day and it’s all I ever want to do.

Something most people do not know about me is…

Fern: I’m Balding.

The band/artist that altered my perception on life is ___________ because______

Chris: this is nearly impossible. So many bands, so many artists radically and fundamentally changed me. I could name bands and artists all day but the biggest band to me was the Mountain Goats. All Hail West Texas is my favorite album of all time and it was recorded into a boombox in Iowa, so nothing matters other than making music that sounds good to you and feels real. They showed me that music can help you save yourself but in the end, it’s up to you to survive.

Fern: Tommy Emmanuel. He Showed me that the acoustic guitar can be way more than just a rhythm instrument.

If not for music I would probably….

Be married with a retirement &; an actual savings account.

What are your favorite song lyrics?

Chris: Jake McKelvie, who is one of the best out there today released an acoustic EP a little over a year back that’s been on almost daily rotation for me. The album is just full of gems but:

Now imagine my face, when the soda exploded
Which by the way you were the first one to notice
You said my life’s a sitcom
And this is a spin off
And it’s pilot season
And I just got botox.
Fern: Jimi Hendrix May This Be Love
Waterfall, nothing can harm me at all.
My worries seem so very small with my waterfall.

Stop by The Saint Friday night and join in as The Burns celebrate their One Year anniversary. Joining the guys on the bill will be The Vaughns, Like the River and J.K. Lago.
