Can’t get enough of that sweet, sweet heavy metal? Well, apparently, neither can actual heavy metal artists. With the world’s most metal holiday, Halloween, just around the corner, we’ve compiled a list of the fourteen most brutally metal songs covered by other notable heavy metal bands. Don’t say we’ve never done anything for you.
1. Mastodon – Emerald
Back when Mastodon was still metal as fuck, they recorded this gem of a Thin Lizzy cover. Get it? Because an emerald is a gemstone? You know what, nevermind.
2. Gwar – School’s Out
What’s more metal than not going to school? Nothing, that’s what. Gwar and the late great Oderus Urungus knew that, which is why they made an awesome music video to go along with this awesome Alice Cooper cover.
3. Arch Enemy – Symphony of Destruction
Further proof that Angela Gossow is the Queen of Heavy Metal, this Megadeth cover sees Arch Enemy’s ex-frontwoman at her best; acting like a robot, its metal brain corrodes, etc.
4. Entombed – Welcome Home
When King Diamond sings about his grandma, it’s pretty creepy. But when Entombed sings about King Diamond’s grandma? Well, truly that is the stuff of nightmares.
5. Dissection – The Antichrist
Arguably the most metal song in Slayer’s repertoire, what better band to cover a track about the Antichrist than the Scandinavian black metal sounds of Sweden’s own Dissection?
6. Church of Misery – Cities on Flame
Taking a break from their bleak songs about real life serial killers, Japanese doom metallers Church of Misery released this catchy cover as made famous by hard rock/heavy metal pioneers Blue Öyster Cult.
7. Dimmu Borgir – Burn in Hell
This song is about Hell, so obviously it’s a perfect choice for Norwegian black metal band Dimmu Borgir to cover. Fun fact: Twisted Sister’s single can be heard in their cameo appearance in “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure.” I KNOW YOU ARE BUT WHAT AM I?
8. Between the Buried and Me - Cemetery Gates
It’s actually pretty fitting that BTBAM did a cover of this Pantera hit. You know, considering that dead people are buried inside of cemeteries and all.
9. Dark Angel – Creeping Death
This Metallica single is about the Plague of the Death of the Firstborn, from Exodus 12:29, as told from the Angel of Death’s point of view; an oddly appropriate track for the newly reunited Dark Angel to take a pass at.
10. Lord Belial - The Trooper
While the original Iron Maiden version of this song is about soldiers during the Crimean War, we can only imagine that this black metal cover has something to do with Satan’s army which is probably just as metal as it sounds.
11. Motörhead – Breaking the Law
What’s this? One of the most prominent English heavy metal bands covering the greatest hit of another one of the most prominent English heavy metal bands? Why is this not taught to in schools?
12. Anthrax – Neon Knights
Featured on the recently released Ronnie James Dio tribute album, “This is Your Life,” New York thrash metallers Anthrax cover this classic Black Sabbath song in a way that would have metal god Dio throwing up devil horns from beyond the grave.
13. Megadeth – Battery
For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past thirty years, Dave Mustaine was actually the original lead guitarist and co-founder of Metallica. After being fired from the band, Mustaine went on to form his own metal band and would later have the audacity to cover several of his old band’s songs.
14. Metallica – Mercyful Fate
What’s more metal than the biggest metal band in the industry covering one of the most influential Danish heavy metal acts of all time? Well, for starters, how about said biggest metal band covering five of their songs at once? This Mercyful Fate medley, off of “Garage Inc.,” is an awesomely metal conglomeration of “Satan’s Fall,” “Curse of the Pharaohs,” “A Corpse Without Soul,” “Into the Coven,” and “Evil.” It’s almost guaranteed to make your ears bleed, but in a good way. You know?
