Side Saddle

A few weeks back we featured folk outfit Side Saddle. In the warmth of the holidays, there are those still swiping left and right looking for that perfect boo to cozy up to.

Side Saddle shares:

Here are 10 songs that will inimitably soundtrack your search for love on the dating application known as Tinder. All of these songs are brilliant and came out this year.

Angel Olsen – “Hi-Five”

I chose Angel Olsen’s “Hi-Five” mostly because the song starts with…“I feel so lonesome I could cry, but instead I pass the time sitting lonely with someone lonely too. Well there’s nothing in the world I’d rather do.” That’s such a great lyric and her voice is so emotive. She’s like a female Roy Orbison. Also that tremolo guitar is badass.

Courtney Barnett – “History Eraser”

Courtney Barnett’s “History Eraser” is super engaging. This song screams summer vibes and her lyrics are fun and quirky… “In my brain I rearrange the letters on the page to spell your name.”

Frankie Cosmos – “My I Love You”

Frankie Cosmos put out one of my favorite records this year and “My I Love You” is a highlight. She sings “I do what I have to do. This is when I say my I love you.” The whole record is honest and charming. It’s not trying to be anything. It just is.

Alvvays – “Archie, Marry Me”

Alvvays’ first single from their new record was a beautiful pop song called “Archie, Marry Me.” The hook is undeniable and the vibes are chill. They’re channeling 60’s pop succeeding.

Gabriella – “Impossible”

Gabriella’s debut EP features the single “Impossible” and it’s loaded with hooks as well as super relatable lyrics about the agony of unrequited love. “I’m waiting with my ear to the wall. Don’t you ever need me at all?”

David Bazan – Nobody’s Perfect

This year David Bazan released one song a month for 10 months and called it Bazan Monthly Vol. 1. The first track that blew me away was “Nobody’s Perfect”. The title says it all. It’s more along the lines of his electronic project Headphones and the record is killer. “Nobody’s perfect, nobody’s free. Nobody ever gets away with anything.”

Hospitality – “Going Out”

Hospitality’s “Going Out” feels like getting ready for a date you’re fairly certain won’t go well, and I don’t know why, but I love it. Also, that bass!

Happyness – “It’s On You”

Happyness’ opening track on their Happyness EP is a song called “It’s On You”. It’s an odd indie pop tune with talky verses that feel like a 90’s Venice Beach scene. The first lyric is “Remember when we broke into the park and you got laid and I watched and you said that was fine.”

Pup – “Never Try”

Pup’s debut record is perfect. It’s what you would imagine The Bronx and Jimmy Eat World’s musical baby sounding like. “Never Try” is the young professional’s angst anthem.

First Aid Kit – “Waitress Song”

First Aid Kit’s “Waitress” has one of the most beautiful chorus’ I’ve ever heard. The lyrics and melody with the weeping lap steel is perfection. The Swedish duo teamed up with Omaha native Mike Mogis of Bright Eyes once again for another brilliant record. “It’s a dark, twisted road we are on and we all have to walk it alone.”
