I normally do not open myself to any preconceived notions when it comes to music. Listening to a track online is never the same as seeing someone live. However, when I was going through my prep for this week’s edition of Happy Mondays I could tell it was going to be a great night of music. From start to finish there was nothing but an aggressive and hypnotic energy in the room.
House of Thieves and Control kicked the night off with a couple of high voltage sets and I wondered if I would have anything left for the finale. Goodbye Tiger provided a little change of pace and brought the volume down just slightly with their spacy and alternative funk, but the energy remained incredibly high and set the Wonder Bar up perfectly for the Headliner.
This night was about the Trophy Scars and their last show before they head across the pond for a three week tour across the UK along with stops in Belgium and Paris. Egged on by the frenzied crowd, Trophy Scars chugged right along and gave the crowd an extra 30 minutes of playing time before they got to sit down a celebrate one of their own and his birthday. Happy Birthday John Ferrara and to the band, best of luck on your tour.
Next week’s Happy Mondays will feature The Ataris from Indianapolis who are making a special visit to Asbury Park prior to beginning their own tour across America. Also on the bill, from Toronto, will be Teenage Kicks and Asbury’s own Deal Casino.
