As I’ve stated in other ways before, the best thing about running this music blerg is getting to know local artists which leads to other unforeseen pathways to further enlightenment. Catch me standing next to YJY‘s Ricky Lorenzo in between sets at a show and you’ll likely hear us chatting about some hot new hip hop.

So when Ricky dropped me a line the other day saying I had to check out Trenton-based artist Val DaGrain I knew I was likely to love the music before even hitting play. One spin through DaGrain’s new album, Raconteur, and I’m hooked.

Cerebral and classically east coast, Val DaGrain can switch flows from lightning quick heavy hitting to riding on a groove in a blink. The beautifully produced Raconteur is a fully realized vision on par with some of the best releases of the year. Do yourself a favor and stream it here now.

To go along with Raconteur, DaGrain recently shared a politically charged animated music video for LP cut “Choose Wise” which addresses a number of issues including police brutality and how we treat homelessness with incarceration.
