The Heavies

Skitch Walsh (The Heavies / Prehistoric Forest)

I’m pretty bad at keeping up with new releases and there’s a bunch of albums that I haven’t gotten the chance to hear yet, so here’s what I managed to buy this year.

1. Sheer Mag – S/T 7″

It’s not an album, but it’s the best thing I’ve heard musically all year. Top notch stuff. Thin Lizzy would be proud.

2. The Men – Tomorrow’s Hits

The Men used to be my favorite punk band and now they’re my favorite rock n’ roll band.

3. Golden Pelicans – S/T 12″

This was the release I was most excited for this year. I don’t think I’ve ever heard a bad song from these guys. Sit on it.

4. Party Cops – Knife Licker

I’m biased because I got to put this album out on tape on Panther People (that’s my plug), but it really is one hell of a ripper. I think it’s only going to get better from here.

5. Hank Wood & The Hammerheads – Stay Home

I don’t know anything about this band other than that their first album is great. This one is just as good.

6. Nikki Lane – All or Nothing

In my opinion, she’s one of the best and only good things about country music right now.

7. Roy Orbitron – Jeffrey Lynne

Conor is one of the nicest guys I know and one of the most talented song writers too. This is him continuing his Traveling Willburrys joke and it’s his best album yet. “Rain Jawn” made me cry once.

8. Head Wound City – S/T

Yeah, it’s a reissue, but they could reissue it every year and it will always end up on my list.

9. Dr. Dog – B Room

I only got into Dr. Dog this year and I only bought this album because the record store didn’t have Be the Void, but damn it’s great.

10. Doomsday Student – A Walk Through Hysteria Park

I only got the chance to listen to this once or twice so far, but these guys are one of my favorites so it deserves this spot at the least.
